Office 2003 recent files registry

Looking at that fix, is there any chance that you used TweakUI. I don't use it nowadays, but I seem to recall a tab that had some kind of "paranoia" settings. Is there a chance you used that and turned off the MRU?

Unert the Explorer category main category--not any subcategory , there's an option to "maintain document history". The description says that this controls the Documents list under the Windows Start button and the MRU under many applications. Paranoia settings must have come from a different utility or an earlier version of TweakUI. I did run across the program, but this was many machines ago, but I had the excel filing listing problem a very long time ago, that is how I finally found the answer.

But this was very long and many installations ago. Upon reinstalling excel , about a week ago, I had this file listing problem, it just took me awhile to locate the fix in my notes.

I think this comes from Google. I removed all my programs from my computer a month ago because 1 I could not keep Norton's LiveUpdate running, and their only response was to uninstall and reinstall, and I did this already twice since Oct , so I just quit using their products entirely, except Ghost is really good and does not seem to have the update problem And 2 I had to find out why Adobe 5.

I updated to Adobe 7. I found out it was my Canon Printer Drivers. You can show as many as 50 files in this pane, though they may not fit my version of Office defaults to showing the 17 most recently opened files. The file names are now easier to read because they're no longer truncated by the narrow width of Office 's File menu. You're also able to keep certain files on this list by clicking their pin icon on the right. Normally, the least recently used file would drop off the list automatically, as the maximum number of files was reached.

If you find the "Recently used file list" option grayed out in Office , it could be due to a setting in the Tweak UI add-on for Windows that disables this option. Another way to customize your list of recent documents is via a Registry tweak. Just be sure to back up your Registry by creating a restore point before you make any changes.

Make sure to back up the registry before you modify it. Make sure that you know how to restore the registry if a problem occurs.

For more information about how to back up, restore, and modify the registry, see Description of the Microsoft Windows registry.

This article describes various methods that you can use to reset user options and registry settings in Microsoft Office Word. When you troubleshoot unusual behavior in the program or a document, first determine whether the problem might be caused by formatting, options, or settings. If the behavior occurs in multiple documents, we recommend that you try to reset Microsoft Word to the program's default settings. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method.

These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk. Always export a registry key before you delete it. This step is important because you may have to restore the functionality that's provided by the key. After you delete a registry key and restart the program, Word runs the Setup program to correctly rebuild the registry key.

If you want to rebuild the registry key before you run the program, repair your installation by following the steps in Repair an Office application. The Data and Options key are the most frequently changed areas. This key contains binary information for "most recently used" lists, including the most recently used file list and the most recently used address book list.

This key also contains "Track Changes" settings and "Edit" settings. The options are in two groups: default options and optional settings.

Office ProPlus is being renamed to Microsoft Apps for enterprise. For more information about this change, read this blog post. You can edit a single registry entry to clear the most recently used files list that appears in most Microsoft Office programs. Many Office programs maintain a list of the most recently used MRU files. Additionally, the programs display this list on the File menu and in several other locations. These locations include the Open dialog box, the Save As dialog box, and the Insert Hyperlink dialog box.

The purpose of this feature is to provide quick access to files that a user is working on. In the interest of enhanced privacy, many users and administrators prefer not to have these files listed. Although you can prevent this list from being shown on the File menu in the programs, there is no built-in method for removing the list or for preventing its display in other locations. You can, however, edit the Microsoft Windows registry to clear the list of the most recently used files.

This article describes how to delete the files that are listed when you click File , click Open or Save As , and then look under the File name box. After following the steps listed in this article, no files will be listed under the File name box.
